The advancement in technology has witnessed the lighting sector develop state-of-the artwork lighting products to enhance the livelihood of people especially in their homes and workplace. It is in this regard that most lighting companies are ever looking for new ways and technologies that can make their products even better with low energy consumption. They are working as hard as possible to ensure that they come up with new smart technologies that have place in this digital age.
As technology progresses, most of the current incandescent light bulbs are nearly becoming obsolete. There are two types of lighting technologies that are poised to replace incandescent light bulbs and these include compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs). In the last few years, LED technology have experienced impressive gains which have seen a great improvement in the effectiveness of LED lighting products.
There is a compelling need for lighting industry players to take initiatives in research in lighting research and development. This will help them determine key areas that need a lot of improvement in order for their technologies to keep in tandem with the ever progressing technology. Key areas that need improvement include; advanced packaging, color stability, product reliability and product life, power supplies, and value addition.
It is common knowledge that if lighting industry players especially in LED technology put more capabilities in packaging, they are most likely to make the more cost effective. Replacing functionality in LED luminaire and then embedding it with a chip would make it cost effective and more efficient. There should be more research and development on how to bring the conventional packaging architecture into chip level.
There is need to shift LED power supplies from the conventional fragile components such as electrolytic capacitors to more robust GaN-based power electronics that are smaller, cheaper and efficient. More development should be based on the reliability of individual components and testing their lifetime. Stakeholders in the lighting industry must take more emphasis on the development of smarter lighting metrics that may detect and predict failures that might occur from the light fixtures. They should also develop products that are powers surge resistant so as to avoid the abnormalities that are caused by such surges.
Color shift in lighting fixtures has been a big issue in the lighting technology. There is a greater urge for the lighting industry to develop product which has color equilibrium, reliable and longer-lasting. There is more that should be carried out to have a comprehensive comprehension of the most acceptable color shifts and mechanisms in lighting.
With these in mind, most light companies can develop products which satisfy the current needs in light technologies. Therefore, product development and management should take center stage in lighting companies if they ever want to keep in line with the ever improving technology.
